So since last year when MUA had an incident on Facebook where they were really unprofessional, I have tried to boycott the company. However, when I heard they were bringing out some Lime Crime Velvetines dupes- I had to try them! They are called Velvet Lip Laquer's and are available in 5 different shades as part of their new 'Luxe' range.
For this review I am going to be comparing them to Lime Crime’s Velvetines- you can check out my review of them >here<
I purchased 3 shades from Superdrug:
Criminal- Bright neon pink
Funk- Dark pink
Kooky- Deep purple
The shades I didn’t purchase are:
Atomic- Bright coral red (left)
Reckless- Deep red (right)
Images taken from MUA website.
I didn’t purchase these shades because they are dupes for the Lime Crime Velvetine shades that I already own.
I absolutely love the packaging of these! I think it looks super sleek and professional, with the gold metallic writing on the black background it oozes luxury. The box is really simplistic, allowing you to see the shade inside without taking it out. I also like how you can stack the boxes together (example in first photo) to save on space.
The back of the packaging is also quite minimal, with a short overview of the product and the ingredients below.
The tubes are made of frosted plastic allowing you to see the colour of the product inside. The lids are black plastic with gold metallic writing- which I think looks so sleek! I hate products that are just covered in writing and I think this minimalistic approach really helps to emphasise that feeling of expense.
The applicators are doe foot, which works well for this type of lip product as it leaves less of a streak when applied.
I have seen a lot of swatches of this product on Google where blogger’s haven’t waited for it dry before they take their picture. I find this absolutely pointless as you aren’t properly being shown the finish of the product and what it will look after you have applied.
I have taken swatch pictures before and after drying so you can see the difference.
Swatched shades are: Criminal- Funk- Kooky.
Before it has dried you can see it is slightly glossy.
However, once it has dried it is completely matte.
MUA say: “Smooch your way to red carpet glamour with MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquers. Long - lasting and kiss proof, these intense formulas come in five rich, vampy shades. Encased in chic frosted glass packaging, these lacquers glide on with the ease of a gloss, drying in seconds into a matte velvety texture. They are the ultimate make-up bag must have.”
The first thing I can say about these laquers are they are incredibly pigmented and really opaque. You only need one swipe to get full coverage and it spreads well to give an even colour.
The formula however is very strange- that is the only way I can describe it! If you have tried Velvetines you will know the product is super slippy and thin meaning application is really smooth, but with the Velvet Lip Laquers it is a lot thicker in consistency. It feels almost like applying a gel or cream liner to your lips and waiting for it to dry?
MUA claims it ‘dries in seconds’ but I can confirm this is not true. Unlike Lime Crime Velvetines which literally does dry in seconds, I found myself waiting almost a full 5 minutes before it dried on my lips and almost 10 when I swatched on my hand! It feels very tacky on your lips whilst drying and I wouldn’t recommend pressing your lips together as they will stick to each other and may peel off in patches. I do think the long drying time is one of the only downsides to this product.
However once it does dry, it does. not. budge. Like, seriously. With Velvetines if you rub your lips you will get a small colour transfer on your finger, however with the MUA ones you get nothing- which is amazing! I wore Criminal the other day at the cinema and ate a hotdog (with ketchup, lip licking and everything) and it didn’t budge at all! It’s safe to say I was shocked as I have never had a lip product with such staying power! If you are worrying about it staying on, you needn’t bother- you should worry about how you are going to remove it! A normal face wipe won’t cut it (I had very sore lips after scrubbing with a wipe for a while) so I would advise you use something oil based.
CRIMINAL- I think this is my favourite colour out of them all. It reminds me of MAC Candy Yum Yum, but one you can keep on forever!
FUNK- I love this colour a lot! It is a beautiful muted pink, perfect for statement lips that you don’t want to be too bold.
KOOKY- A shade for the brave!! This deep rich purple dries with a slight sheen to it rather than totally matte, but is an amazing colour and I love to see a highstreet brand creating shades like this!
Compared to Lime Crime Velvetines: In terms of being dupes for Velvetines I would say they are only successful in colour. The formula is completely different, however I would say they are equally as good as the Velvetines in terms of pigment and longevity. I prefer the Velvetines formula, as it feels a lot lighter on the lips- however with an £11 price tag compared to £3 for MUA, it is definitely the more pricier option.
Okay, I hate to admit it, but I am in love with this product! The opacity and colour pay off is so strong and staying power can only be described as ridiculous because it really does stay on that long. There is a shade for everyone and in true MUA style, they are dirt cheap. I think everyone needs one of these in their handbags and if you like a night out- you have just met the product of your dreams!!
They are available now- online at http://www.muastore.co.uk/mua-luxe/velvet-lip-lacquer
And also at selected Superdrug stores.
They retail at just £3.00!!! However Superdrug is doing 2 for 1 across all cosmetics at the moment- so there is no excuse not to get one! I got all 3 of mine for only £6.00! Crazy!
I hope this review will be helpful to anyone wondering if they should purchase.
Thanks for reading!
Have you tried these lip products? What do you think?
