Known as the ‘roaring 20’s’ this era is a great one for fashion and make-up. Inspired by the great icons of the 20’s Louise Brooks and Clara Bow the ‘flapper’ girl is a glamorous and eccentric woman with bobbed hair and a short skirt.

This is the make-up I created, and this look is great for a fancy dress party as you can still look glam when your dressed up! 

How I created this look:

FACE:

It was fashion in the 1920s to have pale skin and women often used white powder, however this is a bit extreme for modern days. I would suggest using a foundation one shade lighter than your natural colour to give a subtle result. Then highlight with a pale concealer under the eyes and cheekbones, centre of the nose and on the upper lip. We don’t want to highlight the brow bone as 1920’s brows were low and straight. For the cheeks use a pale pink, I used one with a slight shimmer to also add some highlights to the skin.

EYES:

Using a deep shimmering grey, I covered the lid and swept under the lower lashline and inside corner. This is to give use a base to add to. Then, using a round fluffy brush and Oilslick from Urban Decay (a black with silver glitter) I pressed this into the outside crease of the eye and blended inwards along my socket line. I took this right into the corner of my eye and up towards my eyebrow blending outwards. I built this up until I was happy with the colour and the blending. Using an angled brush and a matte black, I filled in my brow starting from the bottom as we want low and straight brows with no shape. I made my brows lightly longer coming almost to my hairline to give a more exaggerate look. At the inside of my brow I made a neat edge and blended this out into the eyeshadow. I took a glitter eyeliner from MUA in black with silver glitter and lined my top and bottom lashline. I then added mascara, you can also add false eyelashes if you want for a more dramatic evening look.

LIPS:

The iconic 1920’s lips are thin and rounded and inspired by Clara Bow. To create these, use a concealer and cover the edges of your lips making sure it is blended outwards into your skin. With a lip brush and a deep red or purple colour, start from the bottom middle and go outwards up towards the edge of your mouth. You want to create this kind of shape for your lips making sure you round the cupids bow:

This can take some practice as it is hard to make this shape neat and natural looking.

Finally add some accessories! I have very long hair so I put mine into a low ponytail and pulled the edges round to create a kind of bob. I then tied a black strip of material around my hair and added a feather clip. I loved creating this look it was great fun! You should definitely have a go, especially if you have a fancy dress party to go to!

1920’s Fashion and Make-up:

• Dresses were short and straight cut as the ‘boyish’ figure was fashionable in the 20’s.
• Dresses had a lot of fringing, feathers and tassels so it would have a lot of movement when dancing.
• Hairstyles were very short and it was a straight cut bob or a short style with finger waves.   
• Make up was mainly dark eyes with pale skin and red lips.
