Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation REVIEW

Urban Decay are known for their amazing highly pigmented eye shadows, especially their Naked Palette, a selection of 12 beautiful natural colours to shade your eyes. This became their best seller, so they released a Naked 2 (I see a trend coming here..) with another 12 stunning shades in. With 2012 being the stand out year for natural beauty, what better time to release their new addition to the ‘Naked’ series- their new Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Foundation (pheww take a breath!)

THE LOWDOWN-

Finish- Demi-matte

Shades- 18 ranging fair to dark

Amount- 30ml/1fl oz

Urban Decay claims:
Weightless and virtually invisible, this revolutionary, oil-free and paraben-free formula creates a flawless, demi-matte finish; light-diffusing spheres make you look professionally retouched. It’s the ultimate in ultra definition.

Infused with Matrixyl 3000 (a powerful anti-wrinkle peptide), protective and brightening Litchiderm, and antioxidants Green Tea and Vitamin E, this makeup loads skin with nourishing ingredients‘

PACKAGING-

Naked Skin comes in a clear thin cylinder with a silver pump top. Personally, I like the way this foundation looks, its smart, practical, and would look nice on anyone’s dressing table. The pump is a great idea, it allows you to get just the correct amount of product and keeps the bottle cleaner and more hygienic (not to mention less messy!). Also, because the bottle is clear, you always know how much product you have used and how much you have left, which is great because you will always know when you are about to run out.

THE PRODUCT-

Urban Decay have come up with a great system to allow you to match your skin tone, using an easy number system. Each shade comes with either a Warm/Yellow undertone (for people with more olive skin) or a Cool/Pink/Neutral undertone (for people with a rosier complexion). Numbers ending in ‘.0’ are Warm/Yellow undertoned and numbers ending in ‘.5’ are Cool/Pink/Neutral undertoned. This way you can chose the colour you think you are, (I was a 3) and then match your undertone (I have more of a neutral undertone and therefore am a .5).

FIRST IMPRESSIONS-

My first impressions of the foundation is that it’s a lot more runny than I expected (I don’t know why, it does state it’s a liquid foundation) I think I thought it would be thicker in consistency. Its fragrance free, although it does have the typical foundation type smell. The texture is creamy and soft and it blends into my hand well however I do notice that it clings onto the hairs on my skin.

BEFORE

AFTER (please ignore my the stupid face I’m pulling in both these photos!)

I cleansed and moisturised my skin thoroughly before applying this foundation to make sure I had a good base. I didn’t add a primer because I wanted to see how the foundation performed ‘naturally’. I applied it using my MAC Stippling brush and then buffed it into my skin using a round buffer brush.

I can honestly say upon application I was very disappointed with the result. The foundation didn’t blend or absorb into my skin but instead sat on top clinging to any imperfections or dry skin I had (even though I moisturised beforehand). I applied a small amount however it looked cakey on my skin and didn’t blend well at all despite my efforts.

Here is a macro close-up of my skin and you can see how the foundation sits on the top and sucks out the moisture. As a rule, generally I don’t have bad skin, I have a few dry patches but overall my complexion is fairly clear so I was really shocked when this was the result.

This being said, a good point about the foundation is it did even out slight redness I had on my skin and the demi-matte finish was nice, however generally I was not impressed.

On paper this foundation looks amazing with all its vitamins and what not, however for me it did not work at all. For £27 I can think of plenty of other foundations that I would rather spend my money on- I mean the YSL Foundation is only £28!

Along with this foundation Urban Decay have advertised their new Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush that apparently can ‘blend, buff and blur your way to a luminously flawless finish’. I wondered if maybe this foundation would work for me if I used this ‘amazing’ new brush? They also said their foundation works best with their Complexion Primer Potion and again I wondered if this was why it wasn’t working on me? And then I realised. Very clever Urban Decay! They make you feel like you need these items to get the best out of the foundation when actually, you just need a better foundation. Hmmmm…..I also heard from a source that Urban Decay were modelling this foundation on Make-up Forever’s HD Foundation but I can safely say they have missed the boat and you are better off buying the MUFE version as its only a few pounds difference.

OVERALL

As you probably figured, I am not very impressed by this product. I was so excited when I heard about it and all the amazing ingredients so it’s a real shame about how it performed. However, these are just my personal views and opinions and my own personal experience, although this product didn’t work for me it might be great for you. If you are still interested in this foundation I would highly recommend going to your local Urban Decay counter and picking up a free sample to try before you buy.

Even though I’m not keen on this product, I still love Urban Decay and I will still try out all their products in the future.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation is available at all Urban Decay Counters across the UK from August and online at  http://www.urbandecay.com/ now.

Have you tried this foundation? How did it work for you?
Would love to know what you guys think!

Jessie J Inspired Make-up!

So basically, I am totally addicted to The Voice. It is amaziiiing and my Saturday night would not be complete without it!
This weekend saw the first of the Live Shows and Jessie J looked super cool with her bright orange lip! I loved her make-up and so I thought I would share this tutorial.

PRODUCTS I USED:

FACE
MAC Face and Body Foundation- C1

Kryolan Loose Translucent Powder- Colourless

MUA Mosaic Bronzer- Shade 1, Natural Glow

MUA Pearl Eyeshadow- Shade 1

EYES

Benefit Brow Zings- Medium

MUA Professional Eye Primer

Urban Decay Sustainable Pallette

MUA Pearl Eyeshadow- Shade 1

MAC Eye Kohl- Smoulder

MAC Fluidline- Blacktrack

Eylure Naturalites False Lashes- 101

LIPS

MUA Intense Colour Eye Pencil- Bright Orange

MAC Lipstick- Morange

HOW I CREATED THE LOOK:

EYES:

  • Cover your whole eye area in MUA Eye primer, right up to the brow bone
  • Neaten and fill your brows, I used Benefit Brow Zings in Medium.
  • Using an oval brush, sweep Midnight Cowboy Rides Again over your lid and dab Half Baked over the top
  • Using a blending brush, I used Louise Young’s LY38, and Twice Baked, blend the socket line and sweep outwards slightly for a winged effect
  • Using MAC’s Smoulder eye kohl, pencil the lower lash line and blend with your finger
  • With a small oval brush, dab Twice Baked across the lined area
  • Take your MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and line your upper lashes winging the outside edge
  • Jessie always has beautiful long lashes so apply lots of mascara and your favourite falsies! I love Eylure’s Naturalites because they give lots of volume and drama whilst still looking natural.

FACE

  • Cleanse, tone and moisturise the skin to make sure it is smooth and well prepped. I use Simple
  • Apply your foundation using your fingers to give an even base, I used MAC Face and Body because I love the light coverage it gives
  • Dust the face lightly with powder, Kryolan’s Translucent is the one I used
  • Sweep MUA’s Pearl Eyeshadow in Shade 1 across the cheekbone and under the brow
  • Jessie had a natural glow to her cheeks so I used MUA’s Mosaic Bronzer to give a subtle colour to skin. Sweep Shade 1 across the apples of the cheeks and along the cheek bone

LIPS

  • Make sure your lips are nice and smooth with no dry skin ready for application
  • Highlight the cupids bow using MUA Pearl eyeshadow in Shade 1
  • Jessie loves a bold lip and she opted for orange this weekend so to make the lip colour last longer apply MUA Eye Pencil in Bright Orange
  • Apply MAC’s Morange lipstick, the same colour Jessie wore on the show

Hope you like this look! Tune in to The Voice on Saturday at 7pm to see what make-up Jessie will be wearing this week!

Versace- Black Smoky Eye

This is the look from Versace’s A/W12 Collection. I love a good smoky eye so I thought I would recreate it and share how I would do this look! :)

THE PRODUCTS I USED:

MUA Professional Eye Primer

Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Oil Slick

Topshop Crayon in Black Jack

MAC Eye Kohl in Smoulder

HOW I DID THIS LOOK:

  • Dab MUA Eye Primer on your lid and rub in with your finger, making sure you get the edges and up to the crease.
  • Using an oval brush, press Urban Decay’s Oil Slick onto your lid, up to the crease, ensuring your have taken it right down onto the lashline so there is no skin showing.
  • Now with a blending brush, add a little oil slick and blend over the crease back and forth, taking it out slightly to get a winged effect.
  • With MAC’s Smoulder eye pencil, draw under your lower lash line, only where your lashes start and end.
  • Now with a small oval brush go along the eyeliner and wing it out either end. You won’t need anymore product as the eyeliner is nice and creamy.
  • Using Oil Slick, cover where you applied the eyeliner so it sets and doesn’t smudge.
  • Taking the Topshop Crayon, draw over the entire lid but don’t go over the crease.
  • Finally add a few coats of mascara or false lashes for a more dramatic look!

For an even more dramatic look, you can line the water line with black pencil. Do not use the Topshop crayon to do this because it contains glitter and glitter in the eye = not good!!

Just for fun I added a cheek contour and Sleek’s lippy in Mystic (and did my standard pose haha.)

This look is perfect for a night out!

Simple Beauty

“Wisdom is the abstract of the past, but beauty is the promise of the future.”

Oliver Wendell Holmes

These are the images from a beauty shoot I did recently with the amazing photographer Ryan Handy and stunning model Scarlett Plott.

We wanted to capture simple beauty by creating a natural atmosphere. Her studio clothes were lovingly made by the photographer out of sewn together sheets and pillowcases! However, I love the way something so simple can look so effective.

Her hair and make-up was natural and I don’t often do natural make-up shoots as I feel they don’t challenge me, but they are a necessity for any make-up artists portfolio.

CREATING THE MAKE-UP

I started by prepping the skin and using Mac Face and Body Foundation for my base. Scarlett had really great skin so she only needed a light coverage.

I then highlighted her cheekbones, brow bone and cupids bow with Jemma Kidd Dual Illuminator in Champagne.

To fill in Scarlett’s brows, I used a soft brown from my Storm Sleek Palette. I filled in her natural shape creating a gentle arch.

Using my Urban Decay 24/7 Glide on Pencil in Yeyo, I added a little colour to the inside corner of the eye and blended to create a bright, open-eyed look.

Then with the same browns I used in my Sleek Palette, I created a soft eye. I blended from the outside corner of the eye up to the crease to get a natural look.

To finish, I just used a very small amount of Illamasqua’s Sheer Lipgloss in Brilliant, which is a simple clear gloss. I blended this in so it didn’t look too overpowering, but just gave a natural shine.

This is a really natural and simple look to create, but very effective and highlights the individuals natural beauty. Have a go at recreating it using your own products or techniques! I would love to see any pictures!

Its all about the SHIMMER!!

Make-up by Adam Burrell

Everyone wants to look beautiful in the summer; sun kissed with glowing skin, but it can be confusing to create, with so many different techniques and products.

I am going to be breaking down how to create a simple but stunning summer look!

I recently discovered the amazing effects whilst on a photoshoot and now I can’t help but do it everytime! The simple highlighting make the skin look flawless and pick up on the camera beautifully. But not only is it great for photography work, it looks lovely just for a walk in the park or a night out.

HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT LOOK:

1. Prep and Prime your skin and add your base. I would recommend a thin liquid coverage to still give a natural look. Try Mac Face and Body Foundation £25.50

2. Use a soft creme shimmer and apply to the cheek bones, along the nose and on the cupid’s bow (just above the upper lip.) Blend this out to create a subtle look.

3. Using a bronzer, go underneath you cheekbones to create a contoured look!

4. There are many different colours to use on eyes depending on your skin tone. For fair skins, a nice shimmer gold/pink to give a bit of warmth to the skin. For medium tones a shimmer beige just to give a natural colour. For darker tones a gold all over the lid to create luminosity and shine.

5. To create brightness in the corner of your eye add a shimmering white. This will make the eyes appear larger and brighter.

6. Finally add a shimmer gloss to the lips! A similar colour to match your eyes would be best.

7. Go out and look beautiful!
